The Italian sport media have been insisting for months that Chelsea are keen on signing Dries Mertens from Napoli this summer.

During the January window, it was claimed the Blues saw Mertens as a possible replacement for Olivier Giroud, with the Frenchman then wanting to leave the Blues.

Following that, Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis was pictured having dinner with the Belgium international, and it was then thought a renewal had been agreed. Nothing was finalised, and if that doesn’t change there’ll be a free transfer in the summer.

Naples newspaper Il Mattino report that Mertens is the ‘first name on Chelsea’s list’ for summer signings. More than that, it’s even claimed manager Frank Lampard has been in contact to let the player know his intentions regarding the next market.

Il Mattino say Lampard has also started following Mertens on social media, something which is presented as a worry for Napoli fans who want to keep the player at their club.

As far as the newspaper is concerned, Chelsea will ‘go on the attack’ for this signing.
