Abidal replaced Robert Fernandez as the Catalan club’s technical secretary last summer and even before he was appointed by the Spanish champions, the current Camp Nou chief ‘very well considered’ Mendy as a target for Barcelona. 
When Ernesto Valverde’s men face Lyon in the European fixture, Mendy will be in the ‘spotlight’.
