Ajax were keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Steven Bergwijn in the winter market, but the two clubs never found an agreement for the player’s transfer.
On January 30th, De Telegraaf reported Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who had initially set a €25m price tag, had lowered the demands to €22m for the winger.
It was explained the sporting director of the Eredivisie side, Marc Overmars, was facing issues from within the club as he had to convince the club’s leaders to sanction money to land the 24-year-old.
The January window closed on Monday and the Netherlands international will continue with Antonio Conte’s side, at least until the end of the season.
“It is no secret that we have been busy getting Steven Bergwijn to Ajax, for now and for the future,” Overmars was quoted as saying by the Dutch club’s official website.
“However, you also have to remain realistic. Every club has had two tough years. We as management found it in this uncertain time to properly deploy the entire financial package.”
“Normally you push on. We have no problems investing in football. Like last year with Sébastien Haller, it was fine.”
“You want to complete that as soon as possible, but now the time is uncertain. It is financially all getting crazier. You expect a bit of a realistic look at things, but you can see that it is not getting any less in terms of contracts.”
Overmars stating the Tottenham player is on Ajax’s agenda ‘for the future’ indicates Erik ten Hag’s side could return for Bergwijn in the summer.
