Thomas Müller came up through the ranks of Bayern Munich’s youth system before he was promoted to their first team in 2008.

Louis van Gaal was in charge at the Allianz Arena when the attacking midfielder made his first team debut, and it wasn’t surprising when the manager tried to sign the player for Manchester United.

The Dutchman managed the Red Devils for two seasons between 2014 and 2016, and during his time at Old Trafford, he helped the club win the FA Cup. Van Gaal wanted the Red Devils to sign the Germany international in 2015.

Müller, however, didn’t end up leaving the Bundesliga winners and has enjoyed continued to enjoy success with his current employer.

This week’s edition of SportBild have published an interview with the 32-year-old, where he was directly quizzed on ‘how serious’ was United’s interest in signing him.

“Louis van Gaal and I have a special history together, a great mutual trust. That’s why Ididn’t rule out the option right from the start, although I felt very comfortable at the club at the time,” he said.

Despite keeping the door open in moving to Manchester, Müller explains Bayern’s stance convinced him to continue with the Bavarian club.

“FC Bayern didn’t want to give me up under any circumstances, so this question didn’t arise. That was already a statement and an appreciation of the club, which impressed me. After all, there was no inconsiderable sum of money in the air,” Müller stressed.
