With the takeover of Newcastle United now in its final stages, the summer transfer window could be an exciting one for the St James’ Park faithful.

Considering the backing behind the bid made for Mike Ashley, some changes will be expected, and while that might include the staff, it’s on the pitch that investment is likely to be seen.

With that in mind, it isn’t surprising to see some early moves being made, which is what Eurosport journalist Manu Lonjon is reporting on Wednesday, explaining those soon-to-be-in-charge at Newcastle have ‘sent emissaries to enquire about the situation’ of two players.

The first of those is Club Brugge’s Emmanuel Dennis, who made a name for himself on the European stage this season by scoring a brace against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

The second, and perhaps slightly less realistic, is Napoli’s Dries Mertens, who is out of contract in the coming months.

The prospect of a free transfer certainly is appealing, and they might as well have a go, but with reports in Italy that more prestigious clubs (no offence, Newcastle fans) like Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are circling, it might be an uphill struggle to convince the Belgian.

As for Dennis, the 22-year-old Nigeria international found the back of the net nine times in 33 appearances this season before the Covid-19 pandemic brought the world of football to a halt.

Not a bad return, and his versatility (he can play on either wing) will be an appealing prospect to Steve Bruce (or whoever the new owners decide to bring in).
