Newcastle United have joined Tottenham in expressing an interest in Monaco defender Guillermo Maripán.

That’s what CDF report today, stating that the Magpies have ‘launched an attack’ to try and secure the Chilean’s signature.

Maripán has been linked with a move to the Premier League over the last month, with CDF claiming in July that Tottenham were particularly keen on his signature.

This was backed up in Spain, with Todo Fichajes claiming that Tottenham were ‘very interested’ in his signature and Monaco were ready to open negotiations about a sale.

However, it seems that they will now face competition from Newcastle for his signature with CDF stating that they have ‘matched’ Spurs interest in him.

It’s claimed that Maripán will not leave Monaco for less than €20m but ‘everything indicates’ that he will not continue with the Ligue 1 side as they are suffering an ‘economic crisis’.

Thus, both Newcastle and Tottenham are ‘attentive’ to what is happening with Maripán, with Benfica also thought to be keeping an eye on his situation.
