Signing a new contract in April of this year, Fabian Schär put an end to some worries about his future at Newcastle United.

The Switzerland international’s new deal now expires at the end of the next campaign, meaning that Eddie Howe can continue to count on him for the foreseeable future.

Schär is a key member of the manager’s plans at Newcastle, as he has started all but one of the club’s games in the Premier League this season, forming a formidable partnership with Sven Botman in the process.

This has seen him get called up to the Switzerland squad for the upcoming World Cup, where he will be hoping to represent his country throughout, and the player gave an interview to 20 Minutes in his home country about his season and the tournament.

With Newcastle turning their form around since the PIF took over, the outlet asked Schär what had changed.

He said: “The turning point was definitely the takeover of the new owners and the new manager, who has done an incredible job so far. In addition, the team spirit is better than I’ve ever experienced. But it all comes with extremely hard work.”

While Newcastle are currently 3rd in the Premier League, they aren’t thinking about qualifying for Europe just yet, as there is still a long way to go, with more than half of the campaign left to run.

That will resume on December 20th when the Magpies face Bournemouth in the EFL Cup, which comes two days after the end of the World Cup.

Schär added: “The schedule demands a lot from us, but I love playing for Newcastle and I love representing Switzerland at a World Cup – I don’t really care about the tight schedule.”
