Wednesday’s edition of AS reported that Newcastle United are keen on signing Gelson Martins from Atletico Madrid.

The rojiblancos are very eager for a deal as they need to clear wage space to facilitate the arrival of Alvaro Morata, on loan from Chelsea.

Gonzalo Higuain this morning flew into London and is set to complete his move to Chelsea, that will allow Morata to also complete his transfer, so Atletico are in something of a rush.

AS reported that Newcastle are the club ‘best placed’ to complete the signing right now, and their interest is backed up by another Spanish source.

Marca don’t go quite as far, saying Arsenal and Newcastle both have a desire to sign the player on loan this month, and they push interest from AS Monaco again.

Gelson, along with Nikola Kalinic, is said to be on the ‘exit ramp’ at the Spanish club, and now there’s a rush to find a new destination.

Depending on how serious the competition is, this looks a good chance for Newcastle to get a loan signing in which could potentially be a high quality one.

When Gelson was at Sporting he was very highly rated, there was even talk of Real Madrid interest, but has seen his career stall a little since.
