Signing Chris Wood in the January transfer window, Eddie Howe made it clear he also wanted another striker at Newcastle United.
The reported attempts to sign Victor Osimhen late on in the window were testament to that, but it now seems the Nigeria international is aiming for a club higher up the Premier League table, like Manchester United or Arsenal.
Whether he ends up there depends on the money clubs are ready to put on the table, but should he leave, the Serie A side will need to replace him.
That’s where someone like Gianluca Scamacca comes in, with the Sassuolo star wanted by a number of clubs in Italy.
However, it appears Newcastle are also taking an interest in the Italian, who has scored 13 goals in 33 Serie A appearances this season.
This comes courtesy of Ciro Venerato who, talking to Televomero and relayed by Area Napoli, explained the situation.
He said: “Scamacca is Napoli’s first big goal if Osimhen leaves, but he costs €40m and Newcastle and the Milan clubs are on his trail.”
That gives you some idea of what the Magpies would have to put on the table to sign the towering forward, although money shouldn’t really be a problem for them in the summer.
As to what happens next, only Eddie Howe and the Newcastle hierarchy know.
