Newcastle United’s Allan Saint-Maximin has struggled with two different injuries this term and that forced him to miss eight league games.

The winger returned to action when he came off the bench in the Magpies’ 4-0 win over Aston Villa towards the end of October.

In the following tie, the 25-year-old managed an assist in Newcastle’s 4-1 victory against Southampton. With that, he took his overall tally to a goal and three assists from seven league matches this season.

Although the Frenchman’s statistics are not hugely impressive at the moment, his teammate, Chris Wood, has backed him to be a future star.

“We have a lot of good players here and Allan is definitely one of them. He shows a lot of talent on the field and on the training ground and has the potential to achieve anything he wants. I think in the future he can be one of the best in the world,” Wood told Eurosport.

The New Zealand striker arrived at Newcastle from Burnley in January. When he joined the Tyneside club, they were in the bottom half of the table.

Eddie Howe’s side are currently third in the table with 30 points, two points behind second placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand. Wood is of the belief Newcastle will soon be in a position to compete for top honours.

“It’s fantastic to be part of this project and I believe that Newcastle will eventually be in contention for the Premier League and the Champions League titles. It will take years to build the infrastructure and foundation for the team to chase those dreams,” he said.
