Needing a striker to help them find the back of the net more often next season, Newcastle have been linked with a number of forwards throughout the summer window, including West Brom’s Salomon Rondon.

However, the Magpies appear to also be thinking about the future at the position, as L’Equipe are reporting Rafa Benitez’s side have entered talks with Lyon about signing Myziane Maolida.

The 19-year-old has also attracted interest from Betis in La Liga, who are reportedly prepared to pay €8m to recruit him, but need to sell before making a move.

This has given Newcastle a window of opportunity to strike, which they appear to have taken.

Maolida is said to want more regular game time, which he wasn’t getting at Lyon, and while a move to St James’ Park might not necessarily mean starting week in, week out, he could end up overtaking the likes of Dwight Gayle and Joselu if he impresses.

If Betis’ €8m were going to be considered by the Ligue 1 side, perhaps Newcastle can get a deal done at a similar price.

Our guess is it’ll be a little bit higher, but not by much, just because they’re a Premier League side.
