After the Dutch press made it clear last month they hoped five of its national team players would leave Newcastle this summer, one could be edging towards an exit.

Georginio Wijnaldum got a move away in the form of a £25m permanent deal to player at Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp, but four players remain in the Championship: Daryl Janmaat, Siem de Jong, Vurnon Anita and Tim Krul.

It’s the first on that list the Italian media focus on on Friday as Il Tempo reveal the right-back is part of a three man list of targets as Roma’s Luciano Spalletti looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season.

A deal for Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta was reported as being nearly done earlier on in the transfer window, but the Argentinean international has since been told he will be part of Pep Guardiola’s plans, so other options are currently being looked at.

Il Tempo claim the player isn’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of being relegated to the Championship and wants ‘a change of scenery’ for the upcoming season.

His experience would certainly serve Roma in good stead, but they know a transfer will be difficult, mostly due to costs, with Newcastle not keen on losing their best players as they target automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

One to keep an eye on.
