Despite claims that he was close to a move to Manchester United, Axel Disasi could be heading to a different Premier League club.

That is Newcastle United, who appear to have taken advantage of their league rivals’ decision to look elsewhere to try and get a deal over the line for the AS Monaco star.

This is according to Foot Mercato, who explain on Monday that the centre-back, whom his club wouldn’t mind selling, could be heading to St James’ Park.

Manchester United are said to be needing to sort out two other positions as priorities before moving onto centre-backs, first going after a goalkeeper and then a striker.

This is where Newcastle have seen an opening, as the Magpies are said to have decided to ‘shift gears’ and made a ‘contractual offer’ to the 25-year-old defender.

However, they also need to find an agreement with AS Monaco regarding a transfer fee, as the principality club are ‘hoping for more than €40m’ for their star.

As things stand, discussions between the Ligue 1 side and Newcastle have ‘already started’, meaning the Magpies are really going after this one.
