Following the initial reports regarding Newcastle United’s interest in Velez Sarsfield midfielder Maximo Perrone, it seems the Magpies are taking some steps further in this pursuit.

A new report from journalist Cesar Luis Merlo claims the two clubs have now engaged ‘in negotiations’ for the 19-year-old’s transfer.

The good signs about this move is that Newcastle seem willing to pay even more than what Velez Sarsfield have been demanding for his departure.

The player has a €9m release clause, with the Argentine club trying to find a way to make more than that, and that’s possible since the Magpies are willing to spend up to €13-14m for the signing.

For now, Cesar Luis Merlo doesn’t say if an official bid has already been placed, although it sounds like the clubs will still set those numbers until there’s a bid on the table.

Newcastle’s interest in Perrone was first reported last week, so the Magpies seem to be rushing to get the signing done.

Earlier this year, the youngster had also been linked to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester City.
