Back in the summer, when Newcastle United were building a team for the Premier League after the promotion, the Magpies were linked to the Porto fullback Miguel Layun.

The Portuguese press put Rafa Benitez’ side in a list of clubs who could take the Mexican player in that transfer window, even though he was also negotiating with clubs from his home country.

Layun ended up staying at Porto, but it seems this wasn’t the best choice. With only 404 minutes played this season, the player is not happy with his game time and should be leaving in January.

It’s Record who reported it this weekend, saying the Mexican has told his intentions to the club already. They also claim that although the Mexican sides are still interested in signing him, Layun’s pirority is really to stay in Europe.

The newspaper doesn’t say if there’s any European club interested in signing him now, and doesn’t even mention a price that Porto would demand for him.

Porto paid €6m to bring Layun from Watford in 2016, and given his squad situation, it’s very unlikely that they would demand much more than that in case of a sale.

This definitely sounds like a chance for Rafa Benitez to take their man. That is, in case they were really interested back in the summer, because something stopped them from even bidding as there were no further reports at the time. Maybe the lack of competition could be more encouraging now.
