Newcastle United have ‘came back strong’ for Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata after previously showing an interest.
That’s according to Il Giorno journalist Fabrizio Carcano, who says the player can be signed for ‘around €40m.’
The Magpies are yet to bolster their forward line this summer, despite Chris Wood not being a regular goalscorer and Callum Wilson’s injury problems limiting his minutes on the pitch.
It is likely that they will target a forward before the end of the window, and Zapata is one of the names to have been linked.
A report today stated that a move to Newcastle was ‘feasible’, although Eddie Howe and co. did have concerns about his fitness.
It means any deal to sign him could be a risky one, but according to Carcano, those fears are being dispelled by what the player is showing in pre-season thus far.
“Duvan Zapata is well, and potential buyers have noticed,” Calcio Atalanta report him saying.
“In particular, Newcastle United came back strong for him. The most quoted of the suitors have seen that he is doing well; in fact, he started training camp without any problems, already proving to be quite brilliant.
“So they continue to bet him with good reason. For around €40m, he can leave in the direction of the Premier League.”
