Former Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong has revealed Manchester will always have a place in his heart, but has played down reports he was set to join Manchester United when Louis van Gaal was the manager of the club.
Speaking in an interview with FourFourTwo, De Jong was asked about his time with Manchester City, but also the claims local rivals Manchester United wanted to sign him.
The Dutchman said joining Manchester United was just rumours, and any matter concerning his future would have been dealt with by his agent. De Jong confirmed he didn’t hear anything about Van Gaal wanting to sign him, but did say Manchester will always be his second home.
“Rumours are rumours for a reason. If there was any interest, then it’s something that my agent had to deal with, not me personally, so I never heard anything about it. Of course Manchester is my second home for me. City will always have a place in my heart,” said the Holland international.
De Jong spent three seasons at Manchester City after signing from Hamburg in 2009. During his time with the club the former Ajax star won the FA Cup and Premier League.
The 31-year-old is now playing in the MLS for LA Galaxy.
