On Sunday we covered claims from the Catalan media that Everton are one of a number of clubs ‘more than interested’ in Espanyol’s David Lopez.
Valencia and Real Betis were said to be the other two and there was a worry the interest could ‘shake the stability’ of Lopez at his Spanish club.
Mundo Deportivo said that despite the interest, none of the clubs has shown a willingness to pay the €40m it would take to sign the defender, and Espanyol were looking to offer him a new contract.
Tuesday’s edition of Sport, perhaps the more excitable of the two Catalan sport newspapers, claims Marco Silva is ready to ‘grab the chequebook’ and would put down the €40m, but Espanyol are set against a sale.
What may have happened here is that Mundo Deportivo’s report has been twisted a little in England then twisted again on its return to Spain.
Alternatively, Everton are ready to pay €40m for Lopez, which seems a rather big fee for the player.
