As Alex Telles stands close to the exit door at Manchester United, he was recently linked to Benfica.

Reports from Portugal said the Eagles were keen on signing him, despite the seasons he spent playing for their arch-rivals Porto.

It turns out that Telles himself wouldn’t make such a move. That was confirmed by the Manchester United player in an interview with the Denilson Show.

It all started with Telles speaking about his family and revealing that his father is an Internacional fan, despite him playing for city rivals Grêmio in his early years.

Denilson pointed out that his dad is a Santos fan, and he could never give him the ‘present’ of playing for the club, saying he regrets that a little. Telles, however, believes he could never join Internacional because of his past at Grêmio.

“I have an opinion about this. Going back to that subject I told you about leaving a legacy at the club. When you play for a club and leave a legacy, leave a good image, fought so hard to play and leave a good image… I, Alex, would not play for the rival, for example. Because, for example, I made history at Porto, everyone likes me there. There’s no way to play for Benfica, you know?”

Alex Telles’ contract with Manchester United runs until 2024. He spent last season on loan at Sevilla, but the Spanish club weren’t interested in buying him.

The rumours of a Benfica move were soon denied by sources from the Lisbon club, probably because of his past at Porto. It’s also interesting how this interview, despite being very long, didn’t have a single mention of Manchester United or his short-term future.
