Manchester United are ready to make a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano next summer but face competition from Manchester City and Real Madrid.

That’s according to SportBILD, who say that all three clubs have ‘pledged their interest’ in the French defender.

Upamecano has emerged as one of the most wanted centre backs in Europe after impressing since a €9m move from RB Salzburg in 2017.

He has been heavily linked with a move to a major European side for the last two summer windows, with Manchester United constantly linked given their defensive problems.

No move happened, though, with the 22-year-old extending his deal with RB Leipzig until 2023. The catch, however, is that this contract includes a release clause worth €45m according to SportBILD.

Such a price means Upamecano remains extremely attractive, even in a time when club’s finances around the world have been hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Thus, there is still interest in him, and the newspaper report that Manchester United, Real Madrid and Manchester City have ‘pledged their interest’ in signing him.

The release clause doesn’t activate until next summer so all three clubs will have to wait to make the move, but it seems the interest is there and they’ve made it clear to Leipzig that they’ll move for him.

Of the three it’s easy to imagine United pushing the hardest given the manner in which their defensive woes have continued this season.

Madrid could also do with a change at the back, although it’s been well established that their finances are not in great shape at this moment in time.

Manchester City moving would be an odd one given their spending on Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias this summer, but we all know Pep Guardiola loves spending money on defenders, so perhaps that’s fuelling this interest.
