Manchester United had an official at FC Porto last night as the club welcomed AS Roma, according to the official visitor list published by Portuguese newspaper A Bola.
They were in good company, joined by several other Premier League teams, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Celta Vigo, Montpellier, and Championship club Wigan Athletic.
Manchester United have been linked with several Porto players in recent years, but Jose Mourinho said earlier this summer he wouldn’t be signing anyone from his own country during the current window.
Once again that would make this transfer window shopping trip look a little more long term. It’s got to be considered unlikely Mourinho is interested in Bruno Martins Indi, who was linked previously, and there were no standout characters in the Porto side for Manchester United.
The best player, according to A Bola, was 20 year old Andre Silva, who scored Porto’s only goal in a 1-1 draw. Perhaps the match will best be remembered for the tears of Ruben Neves, who was set to come on as a late substitute.
Having been called over by his manager, Nuno Espírito Santo then changed his mind and put Evandro on instead, leading to genuine upset and frustration from Neves.
Maybe he was going to use the last five minutes to put in the performance of his life and impress all the visiting officials.
