There have been reports in the Turkish media that Trabzonspor are showing interest in Burnley forward Wout Weghorst, which has been confirmed by the Super Lig side’s manager Abdullah Avci.
The Dutchman is expected to exit Turf Moor this summer after spending the two seasons out on loan.
Isci haber have reported on comments made by the Trabzonspor coach when asked about his club’s pursuit of Southampton’s Paul Onuachu and switching their attention to Weghorst.
“We did not get enough of Onuachu last season. He first went to the African Cup with the Nigerian national team, then suffered an injury. I don’t want to face the same problems again. That’s why Weghorst is a name that suits us better. If we finalise his transfer, it will be an important development for us,” said Avci.
The Nigeria international impressed during his time in Trabzon, but the Turkish side have failed in their attempts to re-sign him this summer.
It seems they’ve now turned their attention to Weghorst and are looking to take advantage of his situation at Burnley.
With just 12 months left on his contract the Championship side will be under pressure to offload him this summer or risk losing him on a free next summer.
Weghorst previously had a brief loan spell in Turkey with Besiktas during the 2022/23 season.
