We’re not exactly sure when, but Manchester United made some enquiries about Gianluigi Donnarumma.

This is what Corriere dello Sport are reporting on Monday, as they look at the Milan goalkeeper’s situation going forward.

The 21-year-old’s very expensive contract is coming to an end next year, meaning the coming 12 months will be key in shaping his future as a player.

Either he decides to stay with the club that has given him all the opportunities and money he wanted ever since making his debut at the age of 16 years and eight months, or he decides to try something new abroad, potentially in England or Spain.

Realistically, those are the only two countries where clubs could afford his wages without really batting an eyelid, but Milan are less worried about him leaving than they were a while ago.

It’s explained ‘new talks are scheduled in the coming days with Mino Raiola’, his agent, and there’s the possibility of him agreeing to a short-term deal on similar terms to the ones he has now with a view of reviewing the situation in a year or so, ‘when post-pandemic football will have rebalanced itself’.

Furthermore, Milan are also aware that few clubs have come forward for Donnarumma, and ‘excluding some enquiries from Manchester United and Real Madrid’, there are ‘no concrete offers’ for the goalkeeper.

We’re not sure when that would have been from the Red Devils, since they appear set in the role for the time being, as David De Gea still has three years left on his current contract, while Dean Henderson could easily prove to be his successor going forward.

Either way, this supposedly happened, but we wouldn’t read too much into it.
