Paris Saint Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé was advised to join Liverpool, not Real Madrid, had he left the French giants this summer.
That’s according to El Pais, who say the forward’s ‘most respected football advisor’, his uncle Pierre Mbappé, saw the Reds as the ‘most appropriate destination’ for him.
They explain that Liverpool have been in contact with Mbappé’s family for years, which ties with recent reports in England that the club’s American owners have revaluated signing Mbappé in 2023.
They have grown concerned by the Reds’ slow start to the season and there was a belief at Anfield they were in the worst crisis in five years at the end of September.
Jurgen Klopp had also grown more distant from his players, Mo Salah in particular, and there was a fear he would resign over the regeneration of the squad grinding to a halt.
Thus, the owners, fearing they could miss out on Champions League football, were quick to plot all sorts of emergency alternatives and one of them was to try and sign Mbappé.
The idea was to cheapen the deal by swapping him for Salah, an idea that is not new and has been ‘reciprocated’ in France.
According to someone who works for Mbappé, Liverpool are seen as a destination that, for purely sporting reasons, would be best for the player and his uncle Pierre pushed for it.
He is a highly respected football analyst and coach in France, as well as the Premier League, and it was he who took him to Monaco’s youth team to kickstart his career.
Thus, his advice would have been, and will be listened to, should Liverpool revive their interest and Mbappé ever ask to leave PSG.
