As Liverpool fans will know better than anyone, the Reds need a whole new midfield this summer, and Jude Bellingham will not be a part of the rebuild.

The England international is too expensive for Jürgen Klopp’s side, who look set on missing out on next season’s Champions League, which is why alternatives are being looked at.

One of them, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, is Nicolo Barella, currently at Inter Milan, who recently scored a fantastic goal against Benfica in the Champions League.

With the Serie A side also in danger of missing out on next season’s top European competition, there could be a need for sales should they fail to qualify, and the Italy international would be a prime candidate, or at least one of their most valuable players.

That’s why Gazzetta state Liverpool are ‘following the evolution of the situation’, knowing how much work needs to be done in that area of the pitch in the coming months.

But the Reds aren’t the only team after Barella, as Paris Saint-Germain are said to be thinking about reuniting him with Marco Verratti, with the two very familiar from their time together with their national team.

It’s said that if Inter fail to make next year’s Champions League, ‘there would be at least €60m’ needed to make up that gap, but ‘the hole would be greater because it would be necessary to continue to respect the rules set in the settlement agreement which require a decrease of the wage budget’.

Therefore, that gives you an idea of how much Liverpool might need to pay for Barella, or at least how much his club would ask for him.

Inter currently sit 6th in Serie A after 31 games, two points behind José Mourinho’s AS Roma, who have played a game less.
