Liverpool remain ‘very interested’ in a deal for Atlético Madrid midfielder Saúl this summer, with his agent confirming he is interested in a move away from the Spanish club.
The Reds have been heavily linked with the Spaniard for several weeks, with it believed they are eyeing him as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum.
Their chances of getting a deal appeared to be slim when it was revealed this week that the midfielder could, in fact, end up at Barcelona as part of a swap deal involving Antoine Griezmann.
That deal appeared to be close but AS now report that deal is not as close as it might seem from what has been published.
The agreement between Saúl and Barcelona ‘is not closed’ and it’s a ‘complicated operation’ because it involves two clubs, two players and is ‘framed in a peculiar financial situation’ that would need the approval of La Liga.
Thus, the door is open for his other suitors, and he currently has ‘several options’ on the table should he go elsewhere.
Liverpool are one of them as they are looking for a midfielder to replace Wijnaldum, and they are ‘very interested’ in acquiring the Spaniard’s services.
He’d be open to the move too, with his agent Joshua Barnett, stating that ‘nothing has been decided yet’ but that ‘Saúl will do what is best for Saúl with his future.’
That means Liverpool still very much have a chance of pulling the deal off, although it seems they will have to convince the player that Anfield is the best destination for him if that is to happen.
