For a club that was reluctant to spend over €100m for a player they needed in a Jude Bellingham, the idea that Liverpool could spend heavily on a striker is a strange one, especially after last year’s acquisition of Darwin Nuñez.

Yet, Gazzetta dello Sport have a big article on Monday about how the Reds could make a move for Victor Osimhen this transfer window.

The newspaper explain Liverpool ‘have chosen Osimhen’ as their next striker, for whom Napoli, or should we say Aurelio De Laurentiis, want €180m.

In the eyes of Gazzetta, ‘there is no doubt’ that the Nigerian would fit the type of football deployed by Jürgen Klopp, and that’s why his skills are ‘greatly appreciated’ by the German manager.

It’s claimed the investments in the aforementioned Nuñez and Cody Gakpo ‘did not work as hoped’, which is why Liverpool are ‘looking for a striker who can make a difference’, and they will ‘try to accommodate’ the wishes of their coach.

In fact, ‘first enquiries’ were made with Roberto Calenda, the player’s agent, who has an ‘open dialogue’ with De Laurentiis.

Over in Naples, the desire is to renew Osimhen, but that idea has currently been ‘frozen’ as they await the start of the striker domino effect many expect to take place in this summer transfer market.

One few expected Liverpool to take part in, and yet, despite their lack of Champions League, there’s a belief they could give it a shot.
