Toby Alderweireld’s situation at Tottenham is of course news in the Belgian media. There’s been a big interest taken in the Belgian contingent at Spurs in recent years, and with one more looking on the way out, it obviously grabs headlines.
In March we covered statements from Belgium that Tottenham had pulled away from Alderweireld renewal talks because of ‘too much bickering’, with both sides seeming to feel it unlikely they’d find a solution.
It was made clear at the time that, from the Belgian perspective, it looked like Mauricio Pochettino’s team selections were being impacted by the situation, and it was likely this would continue.
At the same time, Belgian newspaper Het Niuewsblad reported Daniel Levy ‘steering’ for a transfer, almost looking forward to cashing in on the player, with the €50m fee gaining shape around that time.
On Saturday, HLN cover Pochettino’s comments about Alderweireld being out of the Spurs side, with the manager insisting it’s got nothing to do with his contract situation. It’s fair to say HLN don’t appear to believe that, and once again suggest the defender is being left out of the team because of his situation.
Similar happening to Kyle Walker is claimed, and it’s stated ‘Spurs have a reputation’ for this kind of thing when players won’t renew and are heading for a transfer.
PSG interest is referenced once again, but it has to be said this hasn’t been pushed strongly or repeatedly in the French club’s closest media.
