Toby Alderweireld looks like he could be closing in on an Tottenham exit, according to claims from Belgium on Tuesday.
The defender is currently away with the Belgium national team and is completely fit and ready to play according to Roberto Martinez, despite not featuring for Spurs recently.
Belgian newspaper HLN go with a headline saying ‘Who will pay €50m for Alderweireld?’, and it’s explained that’s generally the situation now, with it sounding like both Tottenham and the player are fed up.
Tottenham are ‘no longer insisting’ on a renewal for Alderweireld and there’s ‘too much bickering’, explain HLN, because the gap between what they’re prepared to offer in wages and what the defender wants is too great.
HLN even go to the extent of saying Alderweireld will probably be questioned on his Spurs future during the current international break, and will likely say he’s happy and everything is ok, but his future at Tottenham is ‘anything but a certainty’.
It’s stated Tottenham aren’t making an effort to jump forward in negotiations and Daniel Levy isn’t prepared to go above €120k per week and break the wage ceiling. Meanwhile, Alderweireld wants something around the €180k per week, including bonuses, that Virgil van Dijk is getting at Liverpool.
Tottenham have obviously been keen to keep the defender, but HLN state they’re not prepared to go that far, and pulled the plug in January. There’s suggestions that Spurs, including manager Mauricio Pochettino, have been putting pressure on Alderweireld and this will show in the team selections.
Levy is said to hope to sell the defender this summer for at least €50m.
