Barcelona had ruled out making any new signings in the winter market, reported AS on December 5th.
The La Liga winners suffered a massive injury blow as Luis Suárez will be out of action for the next four months. The Uruguay international underwent knee surgery on Sunday and will not be available for selection for the majority of the second half of this season.
Spanish newspaper AS claims this development has forced the Catalan club to dive into the market in search of a new No 9.
Lautaro Martínez has been their main objective for the summer, but it’s difficult to get him out of Inter Milan this month.
Osasuna’s Chimy Ávila, Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani and Girona’s Cristhian Stuani have been identified as ‘urgent solutions’ by Barca. 
Atlético Madrid are ahead in the race for Cavani and thus, it could be difficult for Barca to get the deal over the line. Ávila has a €25m release clause, while the Spanish champions tried signing Stuani in 2019, but ended interest after Boateng’s arrival.
It remains to be seen which new striker, if any, will arrive at Barcelona in January.
