Botafogo are likely to be ahead of Sao Paulo and Palmeiras in the developing race for Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron.

That’s according to journalist Jorge Nicola, who reports on the situation today and why he believes if the Paraguayan heads to Brazil it will be with Botafogo.

Almiron has been continually linked with a move away from Newcastle over the last few months as he’s barely featured under Eddie Howe this season.

All indications are that Newcastle would be happy to let him leave for the right price, particularly if it would give them more space in their PSR calculations to strengthen the squad where they deem fit.

River Plate in Argentina have been linked heavily, but reports this week have instead Brazilian trio Botafogo, Sao Paulo and Palmeiras were all considering moves for him in January.

That came amid reports that the winger is actually on the verge of joining FC Charlotte in the MLS, another of the sides who have been credited with an interest for some time.

Nicola has now provided his information on the developing situation around the Newcastle man and how it is playing out in Brazil.

“I need to tell you now about Almiron’s future,” he said on his official channel.

“The 30-year-old Paraguayan striker entered the sights of São Paulo, Santos, Palmeiras and Botafogo, at least that’s what the newspaper Meio Norte told us. I confess that I found the news a little weird, but I want to contextualize it for you.

“First, because in addition to citing São Paulo, Santos and Palmeiras, Meio Norte claims that Newcastle would like to release him for €5m.Botafogo signalled with a proposal of €10m euros and maybe it wasn’t even enough for Newcastle’s yes.

“But I wanted to explain about São Paulo, Santos and Palmeiras. São Paulo claims not to have money for major investments. It will be a 2025 season of financial readjustment.

“Santos has no ability to make an investment of this size, of €10m or something like that. Palmeiras has just hired two wingers, Facundo Torres and Paulinho. Would it be worth hiring one more?

“In the face of this scenario, I confess that I am more convinced that if Almiron comes to Brazil or to South America, Botafogo is the favorite.”
