West Ham United icon Paulo Di Canio has questioned whether a move for Gianluca Scamacca would be a wise one this summer.

The Hammers are believed to be keen on the Italian forward, with David Moyes keen to add competition for Michail Antonio to his forward line.

A report earlier this week stated that they are ready to go as high as €40m to secure his signature. That was then followed up by claims in France that they are battling PSG for his signature.

That would be a big figure to pay for Scamacca, who, despite being very highly rated, only has 65 appearances in Serie A to date.

West Ham do not have a strong history when it comes to signing forwards for big fees either, and Sebastien Haller’s struggles following his £45m move from Eintracht Frankfurt are still painfully remembered.

Thus, paying such a big figure for Scamacca is seen as a risk by some, and Di Canio is one of those who shares that opinion.

“It’s not easy to be a protagonist in the Premier League,” Calciomercato report him saying.

“It’s a tough league; it reminds me of Haller, who at Eintracht scored a goal every two games and struggled at West Ham. He’s not a Lukaku.

“Then at West Ham, there’s Antonio, who is a totem. I don’t know if he will be a starter straight away.”
