Brighton and Hove Albion star Pascal Groß has admitted he was left surprised by his call up to the Germany squad, having not spoken to anyone regarding it beforehand.

The midfielder has been speaking to the press in Germany, including Kicker, at a press conference today ahead of the latest international break.

That break could see him make his debut for his country having been a surprise call-up to Hansi Flick’s squad last week.

The Brighton star has regularly been overlooked by his country in recent years, despite having starred for the Seagulls since a €3m move from FC Ingolstadt in July 2017.

Since then, he’s managed 28 goals and 39 assists in 218 goals for Brighton and became their top goal scorer in the Premier League era with his goal in the win over Newcastle at the weekend.

He’s now been handed his chance to impress for Germany at the age of 32, something he openly admits he did not see coming in the slightest.

“I was surprised too,” he admitted.

“I’m really excited to be here. I’ve always said it’s my dream to be with the national team. Now I’m living my dream. It’s an exciting time for me.

“Everyone can handle it however they want, but I’m fine with not being active. I have friends and family and I try to focus on that. Life has so many ups and downs anyway, and social media makes these up and down curves even bigger.”
