With Alejandro Garnacho showing great potential at Manchester United this season, it’s inevitable for the Argentine national team to think about him.

The player may have been born in Madrid and played for Spain’s youth ranks, but his heritage gave him the chance of featuring for the South American country’s U-20 level, eyeing a debut for their first team very soon.

So as Argentina national team director Omar Souto was interviewed by TNT Sports this week, he had to answer to a couple of questions about the Manchester United player.

One of them was regarding what happened at the start of 2022, when Garnacho was called up by the first team to be in the squad for a couple of World Cup Qualifiers matches.

“He had to get his passport and he came with a minor’s permit. I don’t know how they got him out of England. Do you know what that was? Badly written and everything. We went to the airport, they make you the express passport, and they told us: “This doesn’t work,” Souto told TNT Sports (via TyC Sports).

It turns out the AFA managed to find a solution for that, and that came from the player himself.

“I told him that he should’ve done it differently: ‘Your old man should’ve done better’, and he looked at me. He asked me, ‘Why my old man? My mom and dad are eating pizza on Corrientes Street. They came to visit’. I called his father and told him ‘Stop eating because we have to do the passport urgently’.”

Now that it’s all fixed, regarding Garnacho’s future at the national team, Souto claimed that the Manchester United player is already adapted to the country and the squad, and should have no problems featuring for Argentina in the future.

“They taught him to drink mate and everything went well. He’s already adapted to the group. I think that the senior team will take him into account again with a view to the next World Cup.”
