Why it’s a good time for Southampton to make new attempt for defender

This morning, we covered a piece from Portuguese newspaper O Jogo linking Porto defender Diogo Leite to Southampton.

It’s been claimed that the Saints have made a bid for him before, and are still in the list of clubs who could sign him in the next window.

Now we’re back with a reason why the Premier League side should be encouraged to make a new attempt for the 21-year-old.

As reported by the Portuguese press in the past couple of weeks, Porto are in huge need of money. They need to make €100m from sales before the end of June, otherwise they risk being punished by UEFA for not respecting the Financial Fair Play rules.

It’s getting unlikely that the Dragons will make big sales so soon, especially with the Coronavirus crisis delaying the entire transfer market. That makes it hard for stars such as Alex Telles and Moussa Marega to leave the club for the fee they were expected to.

That’s why players like Diogo Leite could become other options for Porto to make cash in such a short time. The good thing for the Dragons is that, according to O Jogo, there’s big competition for the defender. Besides Southampton, it’s claimed that Valencia, Feyenoord, Sevilla, Besiktas, Ajax, Bordeaux and Borussia Monchengladbach are all after him.
