Former coach Johan Boskamp has defended Everton forward Romelu Lukaku after he came in for flak for missing an open goal last night. Lukaku came on as a second half substitute, but missed two opportunities to win the game for Belgium.

Voetbal Nieuws have reported on comments Boskamp made in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw. The Dutchman said he realises all Lukaku needed to do was tap the ball into the net, but he doesn’t understand why his own fans wanted to boo him for missing.

Boskamp went on to point out this has happened in the past with the Belgium supporters if things aren’t going well for the team.

“He just needs to tap into the goal. Listen, the fans whistle again. Just like against Bosnia. I do not understand,” said the Boskamp on Lukaku’s miss.

Lukaku had a night to forget in Amsterdam especially given the endorsement Everton manager Ronald Koeman gave him before the game. Koeman compared the 23-year-old to his former international teammate Patrick Kluivert, and said he believes Lukaku could go on to play for a major club in Europe.
