As Liverpool’s chase for Benfica star Enzo Fernandez is taken very seriously by the Spanish media, that’s also seen as a sign that the Reds are giving up on other targets.

Marca feature a story claiming that this move leaves a ‘clear path’ for Real Madrid to go after Jude Bellingham.

Liverpool had been seen as the biggest competitors to sign the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, but with the Reds looking at Fernandez as a ‘much more accessible target’, that makes the Argentine player their priority in the January window.

Marca points out that Real Madrid are not in such hurry to sign a midfielder in the middle of the season. That’s why they can watch Jurgen Klopp sign Fernandez and move more calmly for their main target.

It’s well known that Bellingham will be a very expensive player, but the Santiago Bernabeu side now believe ‘the effort could be worth it’, as he ‘can fit in perfectly’ in their squad. Plus now that Liverpool can ‘give up’ their chase, the race gets a lot more simple.

The Marca report is obviously heavily slanted towards Real Madrid, and some claims coming from elsewhere have suggested Liverpool could wait until the summer for a new midfielder.
