West Ham United star Edson Alvarez has now admitted how close he was to signing for another club right before he moved to London Stadium.

Speaking to Mexico’s TV-Laint, he claimed that Borussia Dortmund were actually very close to signing him from Ajax.

In quoted brought by Sport Bild, Alvarez not only explained how the move to Bundesliga failed, but also made it sound like he wished that had happened, as West Ham only showed up later to get him signed.

“Everything was sorted out, the salary, they got me a house, they even took care of schools for my children.”

“That’s how things are sometimes in life. But I still don’t understand it to this day.”

“The deal fell through out of nowhere!”

West Ham ended up finding a €38m deal with Ajax to bring the player to London. So far, he made 35 appearances for the Hammers, even getting a couple of goals and assists.

Covering the quotes, Bild wonders whether Borussia Dortmund made the right decision by going after Wolfsburg’s Felix Nmecha instead.

They point out that the player has been struggled with injuries, only making 18 appearances for the club this season, while Alvarez has been a much more consistent player in the Premier League.

So they may regret their choice, even though he would have been a little more expensive.
