Bernard to AS Roma is off, unless there’s any major changes in the coming days.
The Everton player has been linked with Roma since the last transfer window, with claims building in recent weeks and stories from the Italian media every day.
With Robin Olsen on loan at the Premier League club from Roma, and Carlo Ancelotti thought to be happy with the goalkeeper, the idea was to make his stay permanent and send Bernard the other way, also on a permanent transfer.
Everton, understandably, wanted a big chunk of money as well as Olsen, and that’s where things hit problems. The deal became complicated and it was always going to be difficult for the two clubs to agree on how a deal would be split.
Instead, the Serie A club are set to sign Stephan El Shaarawy. Corriere dello Sport report the Bernard idea has dropped, and El Shaarawy will be returning to Roma from Shanghai Shenhua.
It’s stated Shanghai have ‘given up’ on their demands, which would suggest this could be a free transfer or loan. The player is set for his medical, and that almost entirely kills the need for Bernard.
