Leicester City’s relegation to the Championship was confirmed at the weekend after their loss to Liverpool.
Speculation about Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future is rising, with the Foxes having won only two games during the Dutchman’s stint in the top-flight.
Criticism for the ex-striker has now come from pundit Hugo Borst, who spoke to Algemeen Dagblad about Van Nistelrooy and his situation as manager.
He said, as relayed by PSVFans: “How special is it that the last time was in 2020. The time before that: 1990. And Slot is not exactly a coach who can boast any international experience.
“Good for the Dutch coaching guild, they say. But is that the case when at the very bottom of the Premier League an iconic Dutchman seems to have thoroughly ruined things? I’m talking about Ruud van Nistelrooy.”
When speaking of whether one should feel sorry for the 48-year-old, Borst stated that he had a team which could not be saved and went on to criticise his decision to join Leicester City in the first place.
“Relegated with Leicester City in a way you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy, with only three wins in 22 games. He had absolutely no chance.
“His mediocre attackers scored once every 164 minutes. The statistics of the defenders were just as disastrous. He didn’t flog one dead horse, but eleven corpses.”
Speaking further, he said: “Everyone warned him. Don’t do it, Ruud! Why did he jump in with such a hopeless team? You would think that a (former) striker should know what to get. You don’t walk on some balls. Waste of energy.”
It is fair to say that Leicester City’s squad quality was always going to leave them in the lower reaches of the Premier League, but it is also fair to question Van Nistelrooy’s decision to join in the middle of the season.
Taking into account the fact he arrived right after impressing at Manchester United, the choice could have been wiser. He had also impressed in his managerial stint at PSV Eindhoven.
If anything, he could have waited for a better opportunity to come around and things may have been very different for him. Now, he has to make sure that his next career choice is a wise one.
