When speaking of Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes, it’s hard not to think of Everton. The Toffees were heavily linked to the player last summer, with the 23-year-old even admitting that there was interest, and now continue to be named in stories about him.

Now the Lions played Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and following the Brazilian’s display, Pep Guardiola made big complements towards him.

So the Lisbon media is today full of stories about the possibility of Nunes moving to the Premier League at the end of the season. And to speak about that, they’ve, of course, recalled Everton’s interest.

Newspaper Correio da Manhã points out that the Toffees emerged as the ‘main candidate’ to land the midfielder at the start of the season, when Sporting only wanted €20m for him.

Record says something similar, claiming Everton were one of those who ‘most insisted’ for the player, who ended up staying with the Lions and signing a new deal until 2026.

Nunes not only renewed his contract but also kept up with his good form, and that means Sporting will fight harder to keep him. He’s now protected by a release clause worth €60m, and while Correio da Manhã believes he could go for around €30m, Record reckons it’d take €50m to land him.

Everton had officials in Portugal who saw Nunes at the weekend. As reported by newspaper O Jogo, the Toffees sent scouts for the match between Porto and Sporting, which turned out to be an entertaining 2-2 draw, with the midfielder featuring for the 90 minutes.
