Real Madrid went out of the Copa del Rey on Thursday evening, losing to Athletic Club Bilbao.

Karim Benzema wasn’t available for the match, and after the loss Carlo Ancelotti explained he just doesn’t have a player close to the level of the Frenchman.

The manager used several options in attack, including players such as Isco and Asensio, who usually play further back, or in the case of Isco don’t usually play.

Luka Jovic didn’t even get off the bench, and AS now point out that makes his rejection of a January move, with Everton the only club named, all the stranger.

Despite Benzema being injured, despite it being a cup game, despite a striker being needed, and despite Isco being brought on, Jovic didn’t get a minute.

AS say ‘Everton interested appeared’ on ‘the final day’ of the window, but Jovic didn’t even want to listen.

The Spanish newspaper say Thursday night’s match was a ‘jug of cold water’ for the striker, and they add: ‘He cost €60m. He now has a market value of €20m and a contract until 2025.’

Everton look to have a much better chance of a deal from June onwards, with Madrid clearly not counting on the Serbian, and Jovic surely having to begin to accept his Los Blancos dream may be over.
