Towards the end of the last season, when Tottenham Hotspur were looking for a new manager, we saw many links saying they could sign Arne Slot from Feyenoord.

This rumour may be long gone, but the Dutch media now has a very good reason to bring it back.

Outlet Rijnmond today features a story where they talk about transfer news, analysing many cases and explaining the big dilemma between being sure of some information or putting it out as fast as you can.

Among the many examples, they had one of their own to use. That’s the time they claimed that Arne Slot wanted to leave Feyenoord to take charge of Tottenham.

That story is no longer on their website, and Rijnmond editor-in-chief Ruud van Os explained that actually happened.

“We consider journalistic reliability enormously important, especially at a time when facts are under pressure. That is also why we are always cautious about bringing rumours. We do, of course, always want to bring important news as soon as possible,” said Ruud van Os.

“That is why we had a report ready in our editorial system about Slot’s departure. Through human error, it appeared. That was hugely disappointing, especially for our Feyenoord watchers, who had nothing to do with it. We immediately noticed that this damaged our credibility. It dented the relationship with Feyenoord and our audience.”

It’s indeed very nice to see Rijnmond coming forward to admit their mistake and make a little reflection on it, especially because we’re talking about an industry which usually doesn’t mind being wrong about transfer rumours.

That’s definitely a story we recommend reading.
