Former Manchester United star Edwin van der Sar has advised Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul to make the next step in his career. Krul is currently on loan with AZ from Newcastle United, but will find it difficult to win his place back with the Championship side when he returns in the summer.

Writing in his column for De Telegraaf, Van der Sar said Krul’s recent penalty heroics for AZ will give the Newcastle United loanee confidence, but now he must think where his career goes from here. The Dutchman believes Krul should follow a similar path to his, and make a move which can define the latter stages of his career.

“A nice moment after a tough six months at Ajax and before that six months rehabilitation in England. I hope it’s a turning point for him and that he’s going to make the next step in his career. Look at me, I would say, when I was 34-years-old. I also made the move towards an international club. That is the place you want to be in as with many Dutch footballers,” said the former Netherlands international.

Due to injury and Rafael Benitez bringing in Matz Sels during the last summer transfer window, Krul was loaned out to Ajax. However, his move to the Dutch giants didn’t work out, and subsequently he left for AZ in the last window. Krul was the hero for AZ last week when his penalty shoot-out save booked his club a place in the Dutch Cup final.
