Midfielder Maximilian Meyer has insisted he was made to “look stupid” at Crystal Palace despite a positive start to life at Selhurst Park.

Meyer joined Palace on a free transfer from Schalke in August 2018 and would go on to spend three years in London before a free transfer to Koln in 2021.

He would only manage 56 appearances for Palace during his time at the club, with 36 of those coming in his first season as he managed a tally of two goals and three assists.

By the following season he was out of the picture, making just 19 appearances across the campaign totalling 761 minutes in total while in his final season he would manage 14 appearances and 619 in total.

It means neither he nor Crystal Palace fans look back at his time at the club with any fondness, particularly Meyer, who has bounced from Koln, to Fenerbahce to Midtjylland to Luzern since leaving the Eagles.

He’s been impressing in Switzerland this season and in a conversation with Sport 1, looked back at his time with Crystal Palace and other clubs.

“England was a big step, things went well for me there at the beginning,” he told them.

“After Schalke, everything was new – and also exciting. The league and life in London were nice new experiences.

“At some point I stopped playing regularly and if you don’t play, you always look stupid. I have to live with that.”
