As Sporting manager Ruben Amorim today held a press conference ahead of the weekend’s match, it was obviously impossible not to talk about Matheus Nunes’ transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
With the Lions unable to resist to Wolves’ offer, the general feeling in the Portuguese media had been of loss, since the club had already seen his midfield partner João Palhinha moving to Fulham earlier in the window.
So speaking to the local media, Amorim admitted he’s not happy about the situation, pointing out how important Nunes had been for Sporting’s squad.
“Of course I wasn’t satisfied… losing a player like Matheus Nunes… If I wasn’t dissatisfied, something bad would be going on with me,” said Ruben Amorim (via Sapo).
“About heartburn, Mister Conceição, even though he’s a champion and won several titles, is always more sour. We have different personalities. But of course I’m not happy, Matheus Nunes is a player who is sorely missed, I didn’t expect to lose him but now it’s time to prepare for the next game.”
On Friday morning, we covered a piece from Correio da Manhã which said Amorim is upset with the player as well.
Matheus Nunes had turned down both Wolves and West Ham, and that encouraged the manager to show up in a press conference claiming these are new times at Sporting, with footballers wanting to stay at the club.
With the midfielder changing his mind and completing the move to the Molineux, the newspaper claimed the coach got hurt by that.
