Flamengo suffered a huge blow in Copa do Brasil’s semifinals last night, as following a 2-2 draw in Curitiba, the Rio de Janeiro side were defeated by Athletico Paranaense 3-0 at home, in a surprising and disappointing elimination for them.

That means they’re losing at least £3m, which is the amount paid to the finalists, while they could’ve made £6m for winning the title, which, as pointed out by ESPN, may impact in a future deal with Manchester United.

The reason for that is the loan of Andreas Pereira, who’s playing for the Brazilian side on loan from Old Trafford until June 2022, and can move permanently if the buying clause is triggered.

Although most reports had been saying that Flamengo would need to pay Manchester United €20m for the move, ESPN now says it’s actually €22m, and the Rio de Janeiro would’ve had it easier if winning the game last night.

Flamengo’s performance was obviously criticised, and a lot of it had to do with Andreas.

Manager Renato Gaúcho used the 25-year-old on the left wing, where he had a poor match, and missed a big chance at the end of the first half.

Now while the Brazilian club still evaluate whether they’ll buy him at the end of the spell or not, it certainly got more difficult to afford that amount and break their transfer record.
