While it isn’t as incessant as it once was, the Matteo Darmain returning to Italy stories still make an appearance here and there in the local media.

Corriere dello Sport are the ones guilty of it over the weekend, yet they cover the story with some detail we haven’t seen in a while, namely giving their readers the amount they are willing to pay for the Manchester United defender’s services.

The idea to make a move for the Italy international isn’t new, as you all know, and the club’s reluctance to trigger Cédric’s view to buy clause in their loan agreement with Southampton has brought the Darmian dossier back to the fore.

Corriere state that should they decide against paying for the Portuguese, with the move seen as ‘difficult’, they will turn their attention to Darmian, and ‘will offer’ €7-8m, although Manchester United want €12m.

We’re guessing this will be their ‘starting low’ with a hope to bring the price down bid, as we all know Ed Woodward isn’t scared to stand in the player’s way if the club doesn’t get what they feel his value is.

After all, this has happened over the past two to three transfer windows.

At this point, even we’d like to see Woodward agree to that offer. It’s not awful for a player who almost never plays.
