It was a big deal when Estudiantes de La Plata managed to sign Marcos Rojo from Manchester United. Even on a six-month loan deal, it was considered a great achievement to have the defender back at the club.
However, just like for almost everyone else in the world, things haven’t gone as planned this year. Due to the Coronavirus spread, the 30-year-old has only made one appearance for El Pincha before the Argentine season was stopped.
Now local outlet Info Cielo has a story about Estudiantes’ situation today, saying there are several players whose contracts are running out soon.
In Rojo’s case, the loan expires at the end of June. And the outlet claims the La Plata side will be trying to extend the loan deal with Manchester United.
Interestingly, part of the Argentine media had been claiming that his move would become permanent soon, even though there’s no buying clause in the contract.
But Info Cielo says the club want a new loan. They even mention another loanee Estudiantes have, Mateo Retegui, saying that’s a different case because they do have a buying option over him.
