Following a number of failed attempts to leave Newcastle, especially late in the last transfer window, Achraf Lazaar, despite never being used by Rafa Benitez, remains at St James’ Park.

The defender has yet to feature for the Magpies in the Premier League under the Spaniard, and while it would make sense for all involved to sort out a transfer, nothing ever appears to happen.

This looked like it could change last week when Cagliari were reported to have a ‘strong interest’ in Lazaar, but no move has been made as of yet.

Monday’s instalment of Corriere dello Sport do believe the interest is still there for a deal this week, but the defender has been joined by two other targets, of which he’s slap bang in the middle, age and experience wise.

Cagliari are said to also be looking at 35-year-old Federico Peluso for his know-how alongside 19-year-old Luca Pellegrini, currently at Roma, for his ‘freshness’.

The 27-year-old Newcastle man could be a mixture of the two, having already played a number of seasons in Italy while being relatively fresh because, you know, he hasn’t played in a while.
